Multi-gigabit serial links are driving new applications across a wide range of consumer devices. The USB market alone is projected to grow to many billions of ports per year. The deployment of USB 3.0 will target appliances such as external hard disks, camcorders, cellphones and computer displays. For multi-user computing platforms, the 6 Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) standard that is currently being defined is predicted to dominate the market for some time. The main application will be in high-end servers, RAID arrays and centralized storage systems.
